Frequently asked questions

When does my car need a technical inspection in Sharjah?+

A brand-new car is exempt for its first three years. After that, it must pass a technical inspection at an authorised testing centre every year before its registration can be renewed. Used cars also need a pass when they are registered.

Where can I get my car inspected in Sharjah?+

Sharjah Police runs a network of technical inspection centres with partners, including the Shamil Al Ihsan centre in Al Suyoh, opened in 2025. ADNOC and Tasjeel also operate authorised centres in the emirate, including in Khor Fakkan, Al Dhaid and Kalba.

How much does a car inspection cost in Sharjah?+

The government fee for a light vehicle technical inspection is AED 150, and a re-test is AED 50, under the UAE's unified traffic fees (Cabinet Resolution No. 30 of 2017). Renewing the registration itself costs a separate AED 350 for a light vehicle.

What are common reasons a car fails the inspection?+

Tyres are one of the most common. Dubai RTA fails cars with tyres more than five years past their manufacture date, tyres that are badly worn or cut, and tyres not meant for public roads, such as mountain or snow tyres. Old, worn tyres are also more likely to burst in summer heat.

What happens if my car fails the inspection in Sharjah?+

Fix the faults and take the car back for a re-test, which costs AED 50 for a light vehicle. Once it passes, the certificate is valid for 30 days, so renew your registration within that time or you will need a new test.

Can I get a used car inspected before buying it in Sharjah?+

Yes. Many authorised testing centres offer a comprehensive used-car inspection that goes further than the registration safety test, checking things like paint depth on the panels, electrics and the interior, often with a road test. Do it before you pay, as the car must also pass a standard inspection to transfer ownership.

A used car can be great value, or an expensive mistake. In the UAE, the two most useful tools before you buy are an official history report and an independent pre-purchase inspection.
