Dealer vs Independent Garage in the UAE: Warranty Facts

By Sara Haddad, Automotive editor · Published 20 February 2026 · Updated 1 November 2026 · 3 min read

Many UAE car owners pay dealer prices for servicing because they're worried about losing their warranty. The rules are more flexible than many people assume. Here's what's been reported about the official position, and how to protect yourself whichever route you choose.

The 2016 change

Khaleej Times reported in 2022 that, in 2016, the UAE Ministry of Economy said conditions requiring compulsory servicing at the dealer's service centre had been abolished. According to the report:

  • owners may service their vehicles at any centre approved by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA)

  • the Committee for Consumer Protection approved amendments to vehicle warranty conditions, under which dealers should not cancel the warranty because the vehicle was serviced at a centre not affiliated to the dealer

What the Consumer Protection Law says

The relevant law today is Federal Law No. 15 of 2020 on Consumer Protection. Khaleej Times quoted Article 10, which says the supplier "shall implement all warranties, provide the required spare parts and maintenance, replace the good, or refund its monetary value" and commit to after-sales service within the specified time.

Khaleej Times concluded that if your warranty is valid and you serviced your car at an approved centre in the UAE, the dealer may have to honour the warranty. If it refuses, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Rights Department at the Ministry of Economy.

Read your warranty anyway

Warranties still have conditions, and not everything is covered. The National quoted an industry expert who warned of a "common misconception" that a car under warranty is covered for anything that goes wrong. Often some parts are covered and others aren't.

Typical conditions include:

  • servicing on time, at the manufacturer's intervals

  • using parts and fluids that meet the manufacturer's specification

  • no damage caused by modifications or poor workmanship

How to protect your warranty at an independent garage

  1. Choose an approved, reputable workshop. Ask about its approvals and experience with your brand.

  2. Insist on specification-correct parts and fluids (for example, the oil approval code in your manual) and have them listed on the invoice.

  3. Keep every invoice with the date, mileage, parts and labour.

  4. Ask for the service to be recorded, with a stamp in the service book or an entry in the digital record if the garage can do it.

  5. Recalls and warranty repairs still go to the dealer, and they're done free. For example, Gulf News reported in September 2025 that a Nissan Patrol recall was carried out free of charge by the official dealers in coordination with the Ministry of Economy.

When the dealer may be the better choice

  • Recalls and warranty claims, which only the authorised dealer can carry out.

  • Software updates and some specialist diagnostics for newer models.

  • Complex new technology where an independent garage may not yet have the tools.

When an independent garage makes sense

  • Routine servicing such as oil, filters, brakes and tyres, where a good specialist matches dealer quality.

  • Out-of-warranty cars, where cost matters more.

  • Brand specialists who focus on one make. Browse Mercedes-Benz garages, BMW garages and Toyota garages.

Driving in UAE Floods and Rain: Car Damage and Repairs

Heavy rain is rare in the UAE, but when it comes it can be severe. In April 2024, the National Centre of Meteorology recorded 254.8mm of rain in under 24 hours at Khatm Al Shakla in Al Ain, the highest rainfall since records began in 1949, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
