A brand-new car is exempt for its first three years. After that, it must pass a technical inspection at an authorised testing centre every year before its registration can be renewed. Used cars also need a pass when they are registered.
At a testing centre authorised by the licensing authority of the emirate where the car is registered. Check that the centre handles your vehicle type and the test you need, such as a renewal, ownership transfer or export test.
The government fee for a light vehicle technical inspection is AED 150, and a re-test is AED 50, under the UAE's unified traffic fees (Cabinet Resolution No. 30 of 2017). Renewing the registration itself costs a separate AED 350 for a light vehicle.
Tyres are one of the most common. Dubai RTA fails cars with tyres more than five years past their manufacture date, tyres that are badly worn or cut, and tyres not meant for public roads, such as mountain or snow tyres. Old, worn tyres are also more likely to burst in summer heat.
Fix the faults and take the car back for a re-test, which costs AED 50 for a light vehicle. Once it passes, the certificate is valid for 30 days, so renew your registration within that time or you will need a new test.
Yes. Many authorised testing centres offer a comprehensive used-car inspection that goes further than the registration safety test, checking things like paint depth on the panels, electrics and the interior, often with a road test. Do it before you pay, as the car must also pass a standard inspection to transfer ownership.
A used car can be great value, or an expensive mistake. In the UAE, the two most useful tools before you buy are an official history report and an independent pre-purchase inspection.

Renewing a car registration in Abu Dhabi works differently from Dubai. Licensing is run by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), and most transactions go through TAMM, the emirate's unified government services platform.
