Car Breakdown in the UAE: Recovery and Roadside Help

A breakdown on a busy UAE highway is dangerous as well as inconvenient. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes keeps you safe and gets the car to a workshop faster.

Step 1: get out of the traffic

  • Switch on your hazard lights as soon as you sense a problem.

  • If the car can still move, steer to the hard shoulder or the side of the road, or ideally off the road completely (a petrol station, a car park or an exit).

  • Avoid stopping in a live lane. Stopping in the middle of the road is a serious traffic violation, and Dubai Police regularly warn that sudden stops cause collisions.

Step 2: make yourself visible and step away

If the car can't be moved:

  • Keep the hazard lights on.

  • Place your warning triangle a safe distance behind the car. The Roads and Transport Authority's vehicle testing guidance lists a warning triangle among the items that should be accessible in your car.

  • Get everyone out on the side away from traffic and stand behind a barrier if there is one. Don't stand between your car and moving traffic.

Step 3: call the right people

  • If there's any danger, injury or obstruction you can't clear, call 999.

  • For a simple breakdown in a safe place, call a recovery service, your insurer's roadside assistance or your car's manufacturer assistance (many new cars include it).

Have your location ready. A pin from your phone's map app is the quickest way to share it.

What usually causes breakdowns in the UAE?

Experience from mechanics and recovery operators, reported by Khaleej Times and Gulf News, points to a familiar set of causes:

  • Overheating. Low coolant, leaks, clogged radiators and failing fans.

  • Batteries. Gulf News has reported industry experts explaining that heat speeds up battery electrolyte evaporation and that constant AC use adds strain.

  • Tyres. Ministry of Interior records reported by Khaleej Times show 22 accidents caused by tyre bursts in the UAE in 2023, with heat, wrong pressure, overloading and tyre age among the causes.

  • Running out of fuel on long trips.

Recovery: what to ask before you agree

When you call a recovery company, ask:

  1. What's the total price to take the car to my chosen workshop? Is it fixed or per kilometre?

  2. Is it a flatbed? A flatbed is safer for automatic gearboxes, all-wheel-drive cars and low cars than lifting the car by two wheels.

  3. How long until you arrive?

  4. Where will the car go? Choose the workshop yourself if you can, rather than accepting a recommendation on the spot.

Take photos of the car before it's loaded so you have a record of its condition.

After an accident, not a breakdown

If your car stopped because of a collision, report it first. Minor accidents in Dubai can be reported through the Dubai Police app or DubaiNow, according to The National. Read our guide on what to do after a minor accident in Dubai.

Prevention: a pre-trip checklist

  • coolant level and visible leaks

  • battery age and a quick test if it's over a couple of years old

  • tyre pressure (cold), condition and age, including the spare

  • AC performance

  • fuel for the whole journey on remote routes
